About Snoring in Children

Every parent wants their child to get peaceful nighttime sleep. They do everything it takes to make kids calm and noise-free in an environment that might wake up the child in the middle of the night.

What makes children snore ?

Causes of Snoring in Children

Children snore for many reasons. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • Respiratory Allergies or Infections

If a child has a stuffy nose from cold, allergies, or flu, it is likely that their snoring is caused due to blockage in airways caused due to rhinitis or sinusitis. A blocked nasal passage or airways causes a child to breathe through the mouth which leads to snoring.

  • Enlarged Tonsils or Adenoids

Tonsils or Adenoids are a leading cause of snoring in children. It strongly indicates a potential sleep apnea disorder. The swollen glands block the airways which make it difficult for the child to breathe comfortably through the night.

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Nearly 3% of children of age between 1 to 9 have obstructive sleep apnea. It is a sleep disorder in which airflow through the upper respiratory system becomes obstructed. Indeed, it causes breathing to repeatedly stop or start during sleep.

  • Being Overweight

Obese children can develop snoring due to narrowing of the air passage.

  • A Deviated Septum

A deviated septum occurs in children when the thin wall between nasal passages is displaced to another side causing congestion in the nostril and reducing airflow making it difficult to breathe.
