Indication: Diagnosing Treatment for Thyroidectomy

Your treating surgeon will advise you for removal of part or whole of the thyroid gland based on clinical evaluation, Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) reports and the necessary imaging studies ( like Ultrasound , CT scan or MRI). Some of the common reasons to advise a thyroidectomy are :

  • Benign non-cancerous thyroid tumours, thyroid nodules or thyroid cysts.
  • Goitre – which is a diffuse enlargement of thyroid gland that may interfere with breathing or swallowing; or might just be ugly to look at.
  • To remove a hyperfunctioning thyroid gland which does not respond to radioactive iodine therapy or medications.

Depending on the extent of surgery required, the types of thyroid operations are :

Hemithyroidectomy

Removal of one half of the thyroid gland (one lobe of the thyroid gland); mostly done for benign lesions and as a part of diagnosis for suspicious tumours where the FNAC has not been conclusive. In such cases it is mandatory for the clinician to explain the need of further treatment based on FROZEN SECTION OR biopsy report of the surgical specimen if reported as cancer.

Total Thyroidectomy

Removal of whole of the thyroid gland (both lobes), usually done for cancers of thyroid gland limited within the gland; or done for large noncancerous thyroid masses that are of cosmetic concerns to the patient with or without obstructive symptoms.

Total Thyroidectomy With Neck Dissection

Removal of the cancerous thyroid gland along with removal of lymph nodes of the neck which have evidence of tumour spread.
