Nose Bleeds / Epistaxis
Epistaxes are common in children and are usually self limiting. The commonest site is from the cluster of blood vessels over the front of the nasal septum. Dryness and crusting within the nose as well as nose picking are common factors. Low grade infection may often be a contributory factor to ongoing epistaxis.
Management along with advice on first aid, in the first instance is a trial of a topical antiseptic or antibiotic cream or ointment for one month. Where conservative and medical management have failed cautery to the nasal septum may be considered.
