Thyroglossal Cyst

Thyroglossal duct cysts are rare congenital midline neck swellings that occur in the front of the neck. These occur due to failure of resolution of the thyroglossal tract. These are a remnant of the thyroglossal tract (from where the thyroid gland develops). that move with tongue protrusion and swallowing.

Sudden enlargement can occur if they become infected. An Ultrasound or CT scan will help in the diagnosis. Management is by surgical excision. Care is taken to remove the entire tract including the mid-portion of the hyoid bone. (Sistrunk Procedure).
