Menieres Disease

Meniere’s disease is a disorder of the inner ear and also called idiopathic endolymphatic hydrops. The cause is unknown but it is believed result from an abnormality in the inner ear fluids.

The symptoms include episodes of spinning (vertigo), ringing or buzzing sounds in the ear (tinnitus), pressure sensation in the ear and hearing loss.

These episodes may be only a minor nuisance, or can become disabling, especially if the attacks of vertigo are severe and frequent.
The diagnosis is made by a thorough clinical examination by the Neuro-otologist. Investigations that may be required include Audiograms, Caloric tests or ENG, ECoG and MRI.

Treatment options initially include lifestyle modification and medication. Intratympanic injections of certain medications are a simple office procedure. In refractory and disabling vertigo , surgical options include Endolymphatic sac decompression, vestibular neurectomy or labyrinthectomy as deemed appropriate for that particular patient.
