Bronchoscopy

Bronchoscopy procedure is carried out by senior ENT consultants at Adventis ENT & Cochlear Implant Clinic, who are specialised in Bronchoscopy test. We perform the test to examine airways passage and lungs diseases.

We offer a comprehensive bronchoscopy to detect abnormalities for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Our multi-disciplinary team facilitates latest equipment to offer best diagnosis and treatment to patients.

What is Bronchoscopy?

Bronchoscopy is a test that allows doctors to examine the larynx and the respiratory passages. The test involves using a Bronchoscope that is inserted through the nose or mouth to reach the lungs. It is a flexible fibre optic material that has a light source and camera at the end. Mostly, a Bronchoscope is compatible with a colour video which enables doctors to monitor findings.

Why Consider a Bronchoscopy Test?

A doctor advised a Bronchoscopy test to examine the respiratory system. This includes monitor larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and other small airways in the lungs.  We perform bronchoscopy test to understand the potential cause of:

  • Infection
  • Chronic cough
  • Breathing diffciulties
  • Noisy breathing
  • Tumour
  • Lung disease

Your ENT doctor may advise you to consider chest x-ray or CT scan along with a Bronchoscopy test to confirm the evidence of the problem. Note: we sometimes also use the test as a treatment tool for ENT surgeons, which allow them to deliver a medication into the lungs to remove an object that is causing an airway blockage.

How to Prepare for a Bronchoscopy Test?

The doctor sprays a local anaesthetic to the nose and throat before the test or any other external sedative that helps the patient to relax. In some patients, the doctor may provide oxygen. The patient must avoid eating or drinking anything 6 to 12 hours prior to the Bronchoscopy test. It is advisable to perform the test on an empty stomach.

Before the Bronchoscopy procedure, ask your doctor about your health concern or if you are taking any other medication. Also, avoid medication like aspirin, Advil, or blood thinners. The test takes up to 1 hour and we relieve the patient on the same day.

Always bring someone with you during the appointment for the Bronchoscopy test, as you might feel dizzy afterwards.

What to Expect During the Test?

Once the patient is relaxed the doctor will insert a Bronchoscope into your nose or throat. The instrument passes through the larynx until it reaches bronchi – the airways in the lungs. Brush or a needle may be attached to the Bronchoscope to collect tissue samples. Then the doctor diagnoses these samples to identify the problem.

It is a quick procedure and you may not feel any pain because of sedatives. During the test, the doctor will monitor your breathing and blood pressure. You won’t be able to eat or drink anything until your throat is no longer numb. This can take one to two hours
